The SMART system comes with 3 sets of adapters based on the organism and application you aim to perform.
In general, we can divide the experiments into the following categories:
- Path Tracking Experiments for Adult C. elegans: These experiments are performed on NGM plates and require placing the plate lid down using the appropriate adapter.

- For Small Aquatic Animals and Insects Larger than 1mm: Use a Petri dish with the lid upwards on the appropriate plate adapter (“lid up”).

Parafilm can be placed around the plate border to reduce dehydration and to adjust the fit of the plate on the adapter in case of any dimensional tolerance
- For Liquid Cultures of C. elegans, or meassure of Organisms Smaller than 1mm: Set the Acquisition mode to Microbeam Mode and use the adapter with the grid (IR Microbeam Light Scattering Mode).

In this mode, adjust the Focus to see the grid non-blurred.
Always ensure plate lids are used to prevent water evaporation inside the equipment.
